Beginner Strategies for Slitherlink - First Deductions

Starter techniques for Slitherlink: the 0-crossout, corner rules and the two-lines-per-dot principle. Classic puzzle logic, clearly marked.

Begin with the zeroes. Every 0 in the grid hands you four free cross-outs, and cross-outs force lines elsewhere. All techniques on this page are classic Slitherlink puzzle logic — community explanation, not game-specific data. The game itself guarantees every puzzle is solvable by logic alone (official Steam page), and these are the first rungs of that ladder.

Technique 1: Cross Out Every 0 Immediately

A 0 cell has no loop sides. Mark all four of its edges as empty right away — this is pure rule application, zero risk.

Technique 2: The Corner Rules

  • 0 in a corner or on an edge: even more edges are forced empty, because the loop cannot leave the grid. (classic puzzle logic)
  • 3 in a corner: two sides of the 3 are forced immediately — the corner must be used. (classic puzzle logic)
  • 3 on an edge: one side is forced. (classic puzzle logic)

Technique 3: Two Lines Per Dot, Never One

Because the loop never branches or crosses (official rules), every dot you touch has exactly 0 or 2 lines meeting there. So: a dot with one line already reaching it demands a second — follow that partial line and extend it. This is the engine of mid-puzzle progress.

Technique 4: Numbers Add Up

A 3 surrounded by crossed-out edges loses options fast: if one edge of a 3 is already empty, the other three are all lines. Similarly, a 1 with three edges empty has its last edge forced as the line. Counting to exhaustion like this solves most Easy puzzles. (classic puzzle logic)

FAQ

How do I know a line is safe? In a proper deduction it is forced — if you cannot explain why a line must be there, do not draw it. The game promises logic-only solutions (official page), so a guess-free habit always pays.

Where can I practise? The game ships 12,000+ puzzles from Easy to Expert plus a daily puzzle (official page) — see our daily puzzle guide and difficulty guide.
